2nd Quarter SSR

The book I decided to read for the second quarter is a book called War Child by Emmanuel Jal. It is about a young child named Emmanuel. He lived in a small village and when his family found out that war was coming closer, they moved away looking for peace. Sadly one day, Emmanuel and his mother were separated, he later learned that she was murdered. He was forced to join an army at the age of seven, he was 1 of 10,000 child soldiers. Luckily, Emmanuel survived the war and later in life turned to music. He produced an album which ended up having the number one hip-hop song in Kenya on it. He travels around the world telling people about his story and how he overcame his harsh childhood.

  1. This sounds like a very interesting book. It's crazy how he can go from the craziness of war to find peace in music.

  2. This sounds like an intersteting book to read. It also shows us inspiration by showing an example of how a child had basically a small childhood, but grew into a popular Kenyan artist. I also like how Emmanuel diffused his story all around the world to inspire others to do what they want and never give up to reach their goals in life even though they had a few downfalls.

  3. This books seems very interesting. It is sad to hear that many children back then and in some 3rd world countries are forced to join the military. It is amazing how Emmanuel was able to survive and find comfort in music.
